If you have braces, it’s normal to have sore teeth. Although this is unfortunate, the soreness means your teeth are shifting and moving, which also means you’re on your way toward the straight smile you want! However, this doesn’t make the soreness any less inconvenient. So, to help you relieve the discomfort, our orthodontist, Dr. James B. Macomson, has some tips for you.
First, rinse with warm water and take pain medication. When you rinse with warm water, it’s almost like heating sore muscles. It helps relax the area. So, rinsing with warm water will help relieve the discomfort. When you take pain medication, like Tylenol, it also helps relieve the soreness. So, feel free to take some as necessary if the pain is too irritant.
Second, eat a soft diet. This is important because eating hard foods will only make the soreness worse. So, please eat foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and cottage cheese for the first day or two while your teeth are sore.
Third, use your teeth. Treat your smile like a sore muscle. The more you use it, the less it will hurt. So, use your teeth regularly. This will help keep your mouth avoid being stiff and worsening the soreness.
