Perhaps your dentist has told you that you or your child should consider getting braces. Or maybe you have decided that now is the time to finally straighten your smile. Braces are a whole new experience, and while there is quite a bit to think about, and to do, there are some steps you can take before the big day to make the process go a little easier.

First, make sure that your teeth are clean. You should schedule an appointment with your dentist prior to getting your braces so that you can have your teeth cleaned, and the plaque removed so that the orthodontist will not have to do that when your braces are put in. On the day of your appointment, brush and floss your teeth so that your mouth will be fresh, and you will feel confident. You should talk with the doctor about what kind of braces you are getting, and what effect they will have on your mouth and your oral health routine. Your orthodontist can advise you on how to brush your teeth, and what foods you should avoid so that you can keep your braces in top condition.

There is no getting around it, your braces will be uncomfortable at first. They may irritate your mouth, and you will probably feel some pressure. The discomfort should stop after a few days, but if it does not, you will need to see the doctor to have your braces adjusted. Dental wax can help relieve braces rubbing against your cheeks and lips, or you may want to try an over the counter or topical pain reliever. You will want to eat soft foods for the first few days.
